Summer road trips are a tradition in Spain, particularly in August, with millions of drivers hitting the motorways each year to reach the coast, the cool of the mountains or their favourite getaway spots.

 

Cars are often packed to the brim with luggage, beach gear and all the extras needed for a family escape. But while over packing might feel harmless, the DGT or Dirección General de Tráfico, are warning that exceeding your vehicle’s legal weight limit can carry a steep price.

 

Drivers caught with an overloaded car could face fines of up to €4,000, depending on how much the vehicle exceeds its approved weight. The warning comes as the Guardia Civil launches increased roadside checks during the busy summer months, especially around major travel weekends.

 

Beyond weight, the traffic authorities also remind drivers to be mindful of what they’re packing. Items like radar detectors or dangerous substances such as flammable liquids are also prohibited in private vehicles and could lead to additional sanctions.

 

It’s not just about squeezing everything into the boot. Every car in Spain has what’s known as a Maximum Authorised Mass, which is the total weight it can carry, including the car itself, passengers and cargo. That figure is listed in the vehicle’s technical documentation and exceeding it is a traffic offence.

 

To enforce the rules, officers use portable scales to weigh cars during inspections. If the actual weight is over the legal limit, the fine depends on how far over you are.

 

Smaller excesses of between 5% and 15% will cost you €300. More serious overloading of 15% to 25% can result in an €800 fine. Go over by more than 25% and you could be looking at a penalty of €4,000.

 

So before you hit the road, it’s worth double-checking that your packed car stays within the legal limit. Not only will it keep your holiday plans running smoothly, but it could save you from a shockingly expensive ticket.
