Sundays and holidays that shops in Orihuela Costa and City will open

It’s that time of year again when we all have to get a little more organised and ensure the shopping is done before the end of the week, as between now and summer, barring a couple of exceptions, all large supermarkets and stores in Orihuela Costa and Orihuela City will have to shut up shop on Sundays.
There has been one significant change to the calendar for 2025, though: Shops in Orihuela will be allowed to open on Monday September 8, despite the fact that it is marked as a local holiday for the celebration of its patron saint, the Virgin of Monserrate.
The Generalitat Valenciana actually allows special openings on a total of 11 Sundays and public holidays throughout the year. When deciding which days to choose, the authorities take into account things like sales campaigns and the impact closing would have on businesses. This is particularly relevant in big tourist hotspots like Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa.
Sunday and bank holiday opening hours
From now on, supermarkets and larger stores in Orihuela will be permitted to open on the following Sundays and bank holidays:
- Good Friday (April 18)
- Easter Sunday (April 20)
- September 8
- All Saints' Day (November 1)
- November 30
- December 6, 8, 14 and 21
