Thirteen people injured in crash between two trains in Malaga
Investigators believe one of the train drivers on the El Chorro line skipped a stop sign
Public transport was left in chaos on Saturday December 16 when two packed passenger trains collided in El Chorro Alvaro. One of the carriages derailed and the 250 people travelling on the Málaga to Sevilla line had to be evacuated shortly after 9.30pm.
Thirteen people, three of them children, were slightly injured in the appalling accident and two were transferred to the Valle del Guadalhorce hospital for treatment. Many more passengers were treated for shock by medics at the scene.
Although the cause of the incident is still being investigated, technicians from Renfe and Adif are leaning towards human error, believing that one of the drivers may have skipped through a stop sign.
Footage from the accident shows one of the trains sitting stationary at the platform while another enters the station at low speed. Just as the second train draws up alongside, the last car, which was thankfully empty of passengers, derailed and partly overturned.
Meanwhile, on Sunday December 17, another train derailed in Setenil de las Bodegas in Cadiz. This time there were no casualties as the train wasn’t carrying any passengers at the time.
The accident occurred at 6.45am when the axle detached from a work train that was carrying out maintenance on the tracks of the Antequera-Algeciras line.
