Thirteen tourists rescued from stuck panoramic lift in Mijas
Costa del Sol firefighters had to smash through the glass wall to release the trapped holidaymakers
A group of thirteen tourists had to be rescued from a panoramic glass elevator in the centre of Mijas when it became stuck between floors on Sunday June 25. A stunned passer-by noticed the trapped holidaymakers, who were located in Plaza de la Virgen de la Peña, and phoned the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre in Andalucia at around 3.30pm.
Technicians are examining the lift for faults but it’s believed the elevator became jammed between the ground and first floor because the maximum weight of 350 kilograms was exceeded. This lift, which is frequently used by locals as well, is also only designed to carry up to eight people at a time.
Officers from the Local Police and the Mijas fire brigade were dispatched to the scene where they quickly freed the tourists by smashing one of the glass walls of the lift. Thankfully, none of the holidaymakers suffered any ill-effects although the cramped wait must have been uncomfortable given the scorching temperatures recorded throughout Andalucia on Sunday.
The elevator was out of commission for some time while technicians worked to replace the glass pane and the Mijas authorities issued a reminder to visitors to comply with public safety instructions at all times, including lift weight capacities.
