Threats and insults over LGBT-friendly Nativity Scene in Spain
A Sevilla artist and his family have received abusive messages over a ‘Belén’ which features two Saint Josephs

The alternative ‘Belén’ went virtually unnoticed for a week until local artist Antonio José Borrero Rodríguez, better known as Capi, posted photos on X, formerly Twitter.
“A different nativity scene: without a Virgin, with two Saint Josephs, challenging norms to promote love and universal acceptance. This message of inclusion reminds us that love knows no borders or restrictions,” he wrote alongside the divisive pictures.
Capi’s creation was in celebration of the LGBT community and sought to promote positive reflection on diversity. However, it seems to have had the opposite effect altogether and the artist, and even his family members, have faced a barrage of abuse and threats.
“What rubbish and heresy is this?” one outraged person wrote online.
“Did the Saint Josephs rent the womb of a certain Mary?” another questioned.
The harsh criticism has surprised Capi, who insists that he has nothing against women and, rather than wanting to shock and upset, the nativity was intended to celebrate our differences.
“They have called me everything,” the artist said. “They have said I’m homophobic, that I’ve delivered a blow to history”. However, he insists that his creation “was not to go against the figure of the Virgin Mary or women in general, in fact we could having given two virgins”.
This isn’t the first time the creative side of Sevilla has been called into question. Back in 2021, an erotic bakery was taken to court when it displayed a Nativity Scene that replaced Joseph and Baby Jesus with confectionery penises and the Virgin Mary with a pastry vagina.
At the time, the Foundation of Christian Lawyers condemned La Verguería waffle franchise for “a crime of mockery of religious feelings” which they claimed sought only to offend.
