Three foreign hikers seriously injured in freak Granada goat attack
One of the tourists was knocked unconscious following the animal attack in Alpujarra, Granada

Three foreign hikers have been rescued from the Alpujarra hills in Granada following separate attacks by the same mountain goat. One Dutch woman fell down a twenty-metre cliff trying to escape from the wild animal and suffered hypothermia having spent the night trapped on the hillside, while two injured Belgians, one of who was unconscious, were luckily found by a shepherd.
The hikers were carried to safety by the Guardia Civil who established it was indeed the same goat that had attacked all three separately in a steep area of Trevélez. According to the experts, this is the goat breeding season, when the animals tend to be particularly aggressive.
The first distress call was made on Sunday May 28 by the 64-year-old Dutch woman, who radioed for help after sliding down an embankment, away from the attacking goat. She became lodged on a ledge around 50 metres from the ground and was forced to stay put until her rescuers arrived.
The Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (Greim) of the Guardia Civil sent a helicopter to locate the woman and received another request for assistance mid-flight from the two Belgians, who had been attacked by a goat in the same area.
A shepherd had reached the two victims first, and he directed emergency workers to their location. Both had injuries all over their bodies and one of the men had lost consciousness.
Greim workers evacuated the two by helicopter and returned to the area to search for the woman, who was located later that night. She was suffering from hypothermia but was also seriously injured, which made her rescue very difficult. Eventually, workers managed to carry her up from ravine on horseback and she was transferred to the San Cecilio Clinical Hospital in Granada.
