Three pedestrians dead and one critically injured in Cadiz after bus loses control
It’s believed a brake failure may have led to the tragic accident in the Andalucia city

A horror crash on Monday afternoon, October 9, has rocked the city of Cadiz, leaving three people dead and one in a critical condition in hospital. At 3.45pm, a bus lost control on its way down from the Puente de la Constitución bridge, swerved into the opposite lane of traffic and smashed into pedestrians strolling along the footpath.
The tragedy occurred on Avenida de las Cortes, right beside El Corte Inglés and a busy taxi rank.
Three people were killed when the vehicle mounted the pavement at speed: a 19-year-old woman from Seville, a 17-year-old man from Chiclana and a 60-year-old woman from Cadiz. Another man, an 86-year-old from Portugal, was rushed to Puerto Real Hospital for emergency surgery to save his life. He’s understood to be in a serious but stable condition.

The bus driver had worked in the job for ten years and tested negative for alcohol when he was breathalysed after the accident. Several eyewitnesses claim they heard him shouting “the brakes, the brakes, the brakes,” right before the moment of impact.
“It sounded like a bomb, a huge roar,” one added.
Police who are now investigating the cause of the accident claim the bus only passed its ITV test two months ago.
Given the early evidence, mayor of Cadiz and chief of the Fire Department Ignacio Pérez conceded that brake failure was “probably” to blame, since the huge vehicle only came to a halt once it crashed into the fence and palm trees in front of the shopping centre.
The driver was also taken to hospital although he didn’t sustain any injuries. Miraculously, none of the 30 students from the Faculty of Nursing and Physiotherapy who were travelling on the bus were harmed.
“The scare has been enormous but fortunately everyone is fine,” said sources from the University of Cádiz (UCA).
