Tolls reopen on Malaga Las Pedrizas motorway sooner than expected
Traffic returns to normal on the AP-46 as tolls are reinstated after a brief exemption due to last week´s landslide

This unprecedented decision was made by the Ministry of Transport following the chaos caused by the landslide on the A-45 motorway, which led to one lane being shut down. As the ministry sought a solution to alleviate the increased traffic on the old road, it requested that the toll barriers on the parallel AP-46 be lifted. This allowed drivers to use the motorway free of charge starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday March 16. The original plan was to keep the tolls lifted until Friday March 21, depending on the progress of road repairs.
However, the toll management company has now announced that the barriers will return to normal operations on Tuesday, March 18. This decision comes after a relatively quiet period of traffic, with the motorway seeing more vehicles than usual for a Monday but not the anticipated massive influx.
The opening of the AP-46 without tolls is a significant and historic move, marking the first time in almost 14 years that this measure has been taken. The motorway, which opened in October 2011, was intended to ease congestion on the A-45, especially during peak summer tourist seasons. However, due to the severe weather caused by Storm Konrad, this exceptional step was necessary to help ease the pressure on the old road while repairs continue.
In addition to the toll suspension, emergency works have been underway since last weekend to stabilise a slope on the A-45, which was severely damaged by the heavy rainfall in Málaga. These efforts have caused significant traffic congestion, particularly on the stretch heading towards Córdoba, where vehicles are being diverted while repairs are ongoing.
The situation remains fluid, but for now, the AP-46 will be back to normal toll operations as of Tuesday, bringing some relief to motorists in the region.
