Torrevieja Hospital set for ambitious €175 million expansion
The Costa Blanca hospital will grow by 75%, adding 650 new staff to tackle years of long waiting times

It's welcome news for a hospital that's faced years of criticism over long waiting times. The Valencian government has announced a €175 million expansion of Torrevieja University Hospital, adding new facilities, services and more than 650 staff to meet growing demand in the area.
The project will increase the hospital's built area by 30,000 m², a 75% jump, using an adjacent 11,492 m² plot handed over by the local council. It's designed to serve the ten municipalities in the Torrevieja Health Department, home to more than 225,000 people, including the extra pressure the area faces every summer.
Valencian president Juanfran Pérez Llorca called it "an ambitious project that will not stop," promising the area "the hospital that the citizens deserve." He contrasted it with previous unfunded plans under the last government, including one for La Vila Joiosa Hospital that had to be redesigned from scratch.
Bed capacity will rise from 270 to 457, a 70% increase, along with 150 new outpatient consultation rooms, four new operating theatres, new delivery rooms, an outpatient surgery unit and expanded ICU and dialysis capacity.
The work will happen in three phases over five years, two for design and three for construction. Phase I, costing €87.4 million, delivers the extra beds and outpatient clinics. Phase II, at €34.4 million, reconfigures the existing building and adds the new operating theatres. Phase III, worth €27.4 million, completes the site with 1,370 parking spaces.
In total, 667 new staff will be hired across medical, nursing, technical and administrative roles, at an estimated annual cost of €25.9 million.
The hospital expansion sits alongside other steps to ease pressure on local healthcare, including 12 new prefabricated medical offices due to open soon, 188 extra staff for the Torrevieja Health Department, and planned upgrades to health centres in Los Montesinos, San Miguel de Salinas, Guardamar del Segura, La Loma, Pilar de la Horadada and Orihuela Costa.
