We’ve all heard of the so-called sun tax in Spain, but one popular restaurant in the Andalucia capital of Sevilla is taking things a bit too far, according to one very disgruntled local customer, who claimed staff tried to charge her extra for a table in the sun.
"Despite having a reservation for two on the terrace, they placed us at a gloomy table,” she explained, and asked to be seated in a sunnier spot.
"When requesting the change, the waitress informed us that those tables were reserved and had an additional cost of 10 euros."
She added: "What was even more annoying was sitting and watching how none of the tables under the sun filled up.
“As Sevillanos we love our city, we consider this situation as a lack of respect towards the guests that actually come and spend money here.”
In response to the customer's complaint, the restaurant management defended their policy, explaining that the ‘premium’ tables in question had been reserved and paid for by other customers and were fully booked for both lunch and dinner services.
They highlighted that the information about the premium tables and their associated cost is readily available online, including on the restaurant's website and third-party booking platforms like El Tenedor.
The issue has understandably sparked a huge debate, with many holidaymakers claiming they would simply refuse to pay a supplement; one tourist joked that he would expect to be allowed to take the table home with him for that price.
However, the restaurant is standing firm, insisting that customers aren’t paying extra for the sun, but rather for a superior dining experience.
On its website, the restaurant indicates that the premium tables are those arranged "on the front line of our roof garden, with the best views" of Sevilla’s famous Triana Bridge and the Guadalquivir River.
