ARCHIVED - Traffickers arrested for offering migrants transport to France and dumping them in Murcia
Once their fee was paid, the immigrants were abandoned in Murcia
Officers from the National Police in Murcia have arrested two men in Almería for defrauding irregular immigrants arriving on the Spanish coast by offering them safe passage to France and other parts of the EU. The men, a 42-year-old Spaniard and a 30-year-old Moroccan, scoured the ports for unsuspecting migrants arriving illegally by boat.
According to official sources, after paying between 250 and 300 euros, the immigrants were transferred in various vehicles known as pirate taxis, supposedly to the Spanish border. However, long before they reached their destination the perpetrators would dump the migrants in the Region of Murcia, where they were left to their own devices.
This kind of scam is becoming increasingly common in Spain as migrants take their chances travelling further afield while Spanish authorities crack down on illegal arrivals to this country. Just last month, the National Police arrested seven people in the Basque Country and Navarra for smuggling more than 60 migrants across the border to France.
The traffickers have been charged with various crimes against the rights of foreign citizens.
