ARCHIVED - Unemployment rises in Andalusia after six months of decreases
Data from September reports a 0.55% increase in Andalucía since August, with 4,416 more people out of work
Unemployment has risen in Andalucía after six consecutive months of decreases, placing the number of jobless people in the region at 800,810 last month, 0.55% higher than in August.
Although there are 4,416 more unemployed residents in Andalucía compared to the figure from August, in year-on-year terms, unemployment fell by 155,091 people in the ninth month of the year, representing a decrease of 16.22% compared to the same month the previous year.
By sex, of the 800,810 unemployed registered last month in Andalucía, the majority were women (478,743), while 322,067 were men, and by province, the highest increase in unemployment was reported in Cádiz, with 6,160 more people out of work, followed by Málaga with 2,873, Granada with 1,018, Jaén with 293 and Huelva with 86. Meanwhile, in Seville, 3,647 previously unemployed people found work as well as 1,676 people in Almería and 691 in Córdoba.
In year-on-year terms, unemployment has dropped in all Andalucian provinces: in Málaga (18.94% decrease); Seville (14.36%), Cádiz (14.95%); Granada (18.41%); Cordoba (16.54%); Almería (17.38%); Jaén (14.39%); and Huelva (14.48%).
In addition, registered unemployment amongst foreign residents living in Andalucía fell in September – 2,460 fewer, or a 3.88% decrease compared to the previous month – leaving the total number of unemployed immigrants at 60,893 (21,650 from EU countries and 39,243 from other countries).
Compared to last year, unemployment amongst foreigners decreased by 25.45%, 20,784 fewer immigrants out of work.
Of the 412,950 new contracts registered in September in the region, a total of 386,408 were temporary contracts, 93.57% of the total, and the rest (26,542) were permanent, 4.62% of the total.
National unemployment figures
Although September is historically a month in which the unemployment rate rises, due mostly to the end of temporary summer contracts, this year Spain has registered its ninth largest monthly drop in unemployment since records began.
On a national level the number of unemployed people registered with the public employment services fell by 76,113 in September (-2.3%), making this month the seventh in a row to register a decrease in the unemployment rate, something which has not happened in Spain since 2000.
The new data means that the total number of people without employment was 3,257,802 at the end of last month; the lowest figure since February 2020 (3.24 million).
By sector, unemployment has fallen in the service sector, with 39,312 fewer unemployed (-1.7%), followed by agriculture (-13,067 unemployed, -8.1%); construction (-12,309 unemployed, -4.5%); industry (-6,668 unemployed, -2.4%). The number of people without previous employment who registered as unemployed in September also fell by 1.7%.
