ARCHIVED - Upgraded rail connection will join Almeria-Seville in 3 and a half hours, and Almeria-Granada in 1 hour and a half
The government plans to plough almost 1 billion euros into the Andalusia train project between now and 2030

A functional study has been presented this week of the Almería-Granada railway section, which will reduce the journey time by train between both Andalusia cities to an hour and a half.
The improved railway line will also connect Almería and Seville, reducing the journey time to just three and a half hours.
In total, the Spanish government will spend more than 615 million euros on this project, with a further 307 million provisionally slated for work on the Iznalloz-Moreda, Moreda-Huélago, Huélago-Benalúa, and Fiñana-Gérgal lines to allow an additional reduction in journey times.

The solutions analysed in the functional study of the Almería-Granada section will allow for a journey time between both cities of around one hour and a half with the additional variants, and almost two hours without them.
Spain’s General Secretary of Infrastructures of the Ministry of Transport, Xavier Flores, has underscored that the Granada-Almería railway section is part of the Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-t) and, as such, it belongs to the Basic Railway Network for the transport of passengers and goods.
The aim for finishing this rail project is 2030 but, says Flores, “we should not wait for the end”.
“The good thing about this option is that it is not a new line where it’s all or nothing. Rather, from the first moment we are going to start implementing all these upgrades as quickly as possible so that there is an improvement in time, service, reliability and functionality at all levels,” he says.
Once all the planned actions on the Almería-Granada stretch, the future Loja and Moreda bypasses on the Granada-Antequera stretch and the Almodóvar del Río interchange in Córdoba come into service, the direct connection between Almería and Seville will allow for a railway journey time of under three and a half hours.
