The search for 19-year-old Jay Slater, who vanished after attending the New Rave Generation music gig in Tenerife on Sunday June 16, is now well into its second week with very few leads. Spanish authorities have kicked up their efforts and have called in the big guns: a specialised search and rescue unit from Madrid, complete with highly-skilled sniffer dogs.
Over the last couple of days, teams have been scouring the desolate mountains near the Tenerife village of Masca where Jay was last seen leaving an Airbnb rented by two other British holidaymakers the morning after the party at the Papagayo Beach Club. At the same time, aerial units are scanning the vast rural expanse from the air.
A statement from the Tenerife police on Tuesday June 25 said that several Canine Guides of the Guardia Civil have now been dispatched from Madrid with dogs “specialised in the search for people on large areas of land”.
In the meantime, grainy CCTV footage has emerged of a young man matching Jay’s description walking through the town of Santiago de Tiete on Monday evening, just a few hours after the teen disappeared. However, it’s impossible to tell for sure if this a genuine sighting of the apprentice bricklayer.
After turning down offers of assistance from the UK, the Guardia Civil have insisted that efforts to locate Jay “are not being scaled back,” despite rumblings in the media and several conspiracy theories that have popped up online.
The fact that no trace of Jay has been found despite the large-scale search has led to much speculation about the young Briton’s past and even his motivation for travelling to Spain, which has caused his family untold distress.
“I am really am saddened by all your comments. I really hope I am not taking my son home in a body bag,” Jay’s mum Debbie Duncan wrote on Facebook.
