ARCHIVED - Wildfire engulfs the Sierra de Mijas, Malaga
The forest fire broke out close to the town in the Costa del Sol municipality
Firefighters in the Malaga seaside town received notice that yet another wildfire had broken out close to a quarry in the Sierra de Mijas shortly before 6pm on Saturday April 22. The terrain stretches between Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Alhaurín el Grande, over gullies and hilly outcrops, making access extremely difficult even at the best of times, and the emergency workers immediately called for backup from the Plan Infoca air services.
Dramatic footage of the flames and plumes of black smoke was quickly shared on social media as the Town Hall kept concerned citizens up to date on the progress of another devastating fire. The blaze was located right above the picturesque town and was watched by stunned residents.

Although several fire brigades rushed to the scene, access by vehicles was virtually impossible. To make matters worse, one INFOCA helicopter was battling a forest fire in Cartama while a second broke down in Ronda on its way to Mijas.
With little time to spare, two small planes were mobilised from Granada and arrived around an hour after the fire was first reported.
At 9.55pm, the authorities confirmed that the Mijas blaze had been brought under control, although firefighters remained on the scene for some time to ensure the area was stabilised.
Last July, this same stretch of Mijas countryside burned for several days and around 2,000 homes had to be evacuated.
The forest fire season has arrived in Spain almost two months early this year thanks to high temperatures and virtually no rain and as the country swelters in a heatwave of sorts this week, it’s likely that far more devastation will be witnessed this coming summer.
