ARCHIVED - Work set to begin on La Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro castle in Malaga
The first 16 stages of the extensive renovation project has been awarded almost 90,000 euros by Malaga City Council
One of the most popular tourist destinations in Andalucía, the 11th century Monumental Complex of La Alcazaba and the surroundings of the Gibralfaro castle in Malaga, is set to receive a major facelift with a total investment of 3.2 million euros. The first phase, which involves 16 separate construction and refurbishment jobs, has been put out to tender with a budget of 88,541 euros and is expected to take around four months to complete.
The most urgent restoration and conservation jobs on this popular tourism site will be tackled first and the works have already been given the approval of the Provincial Historical Heritage Commission of Malaga.
In the Alcazaba, the delicate undertaking will include the repair of the wall along Calle Juan Temboury and the reinforcement of the remains of the silo and the Tower of Homage. Facilities for visitors will also be improved with the addition of a baby changing station in the bathrooms and the repair of the existing pergola.
Over at the Gibralfaro Castle, the sentry box and the well will be fixed up while the castle wall and the bench in the Parade Ground will be touched up also. The job lot includes the repair of the sanitation network and the marble access counter, as well as the installation of a drainage network of the castle to prevent the regular flooding that occurs each time it rains heavily.
The tender has been made public and interested restoration companies now have ten days to submit their quotes, with the aim of getting the works up and running as soon as possible.
