ARCHIVED - 26-year-old Swede dies after consuming laughing gas in Marbella
The victim consumed the ‘party drug’ at a villa in the Río Real urbanization in the province of Málaga, Andalucía
A 26-year-old man, of Swedish nationality, has died in a swimming pool at a villa in Río Real, Marbella, after consuming laughing gas with his friends.
When they noticed something was wrong, the victim’s friends managed to get him out of the pool and called 112 and, although emergency service professionals were able to resuscitate him briefly, his heart stopped beating again at the scene.
The group of friends were on holiday in Marbella as part of a ‘stag do’, as one of them was getting married, and the authorities have since revealed that the deceased had consumed laughing gas just moments before being found unconscious in the pool.
Officers believe that the laughing gas, which is becoming increasingly popular in the province of Málaga, may have caused the victim to become disorientated or dizzy, leading him to fall into the pool and hit his head.
This ‘party drug', which is also used by surgeons and dentists to perform medical procedures, causes a euphoric sensation when taken in highly concentrated doses, but it can be dangerous as it also causes dizziness, relaxation, disinhibition and loss of balance.
An increasing amount of young people have been injured or killed while under the effects of this drug, including a 31-year-old British man who was left in intensive care after jumping from a balcony last month.
