British tourist rescued after fall on Lanzarote breakwater
Emergency crews were called to Puerto Calero early on Monday after the 54-year-old man fell in a rocky coastal area
A British tourist was rescued early on Monday morning after falling on a breakwater in Puerto Calero, in the Lanzarote municipality of Yaiza. Emergency services were alerted just after 7.00am and crews were quickly sent to the coastal area. The incident took place near the Hesperia hotel in the Cortijo Viejo area. The Policía Local from Yaiza, firefighters from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, and personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service all attended the scene.
Firefighters reached the injured man in a rocky area that was difficult to access after he fell from a height of about six metres. The 54-year-old suffered multiple moderate contusions, as well as a fractured hip, swelling and a cut on the head.
Once they reached him, rescue teams carried out an initial assessment and used a cervical collar and a Ferno-KED device to keep him stable before moving him. In simple terms, the Ferno-KED is a rescue immobilisation device used to support and protect someone with a suspected serious injury, especially when they need to be carefully lifted and transported.
He was then placed on a rescue stretcher, taken to the ambulance and transferred to Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, where he continued to receive care. The Policía Local took charge of the necessary procedures.
The exact circumstances of the fall have not yet been confirmed, but the rescue was carried out promptly in the early morning hours as emergency teams worked together to reach the man and get him to hospital safely.
