Carlos Alcaraz Tennis City in Murcia given greenlight to start building
New €1.14 million complex to promote grassroots sport and honour the international tennis star from El Palmar

The City Council of Murcia has taken a major step towards establishing a new landmark in Spanish sport with the approval of the Carlos Alcaraz Tennis City project. Backed by the Department of Sports and led by Councillor Miguel Ángel Noguera, the ambitious initiative will be developed at the Polideportivo El Palmar II, just a short distance from where the two-time Roland Garros champion grew up.
The municipal Governing Board confirmed that the tender for the project has been opened through the Public Sector Procurement Platform. Companies now have until July 3 to submit their bids. The complex will require a multi-year investment of €1,140,000 and aims to become a benchmark facility for racket sports in Spain.
“This tender gives a decisive boost to an infrastructure that will promote grassroots sport in Murcia,” said Noguera. “It offers our residents modern, inclusive facilities for tennis and pickleball.”
The Tennis City will include three full-size tennis courts (18.29 x 36.58 metres) and two regulation pickleball courts (10.36 x 19.50 metres). All will be built on a single-level platform, allowing improved access and clear visibility for players and spectators alike. The choice of surface will cater specifically to racket sports, ensuring professional-level playing conditions.
Beyond the courts themselves, the surrounding area will undergo significant improvements. These include upgraded access routes, shaded recreational zones, adapted toilets, children’s play areas and a 44-space car park, including two spaces reserved for individuals with reduced mobility. A pedestrian path will connect directly to the sports complex for ease of access.
Adding a cultural element, the interior walls will be adorned with sports-themed graffiti, bringing a splash of creativity and homage to the site’s identity as a space of inspiration and achievement.
In a meaningful touch, the facilities will officially bear the name of Carlos Alcaraz, who continues to captivate the tennis world. Fresh off his second consecutive French Open victory, the 22-year-old from El Palmar remains deeply connected to his roots. His generous donation of his Roland Garros prize money – around $2.5 million – to support the homeless, even after paying over $1 million in taxes on the amount, reflects the same humility that defines his personal and professional life.
Murcia City Council will also sign a collaboration agreement with the Carlos Alcaraz Foundation. This will pave the way for technical academies, promotional initiatives, federated competitions and other educational activities centred on sport.
“With this Tennis City, Murcia reinforces its commitment to sport, local talent and emerging disciplines like pickleball,” Noguera said. “It will position us as a leader in racket sports infrastructure at the national level.”
