ARCHIVED - Death rate keeps rising but incidence rate falls: Andalusia Covid update January 12
A further 30 people died today, two more than yesterday, but the incidence rate has dropped nearly 50 points
14-day incidence rate in Andalucía since March 2020
Andalucía recorded on Wednesday January 12 a total of 11,565 new cases of coronavirus in 24 hours, 3,055 more than the day before, but the 14-day cumulative incidence rate fell for the second consecutive day.
This news comes on the day that the age range has been reduced for those who are eligible to get their Covid booster jab in the region – it’s now the turn of anyone aged 50 or over.
New infections
The 11,565 infections this Wednesday follow 8,510 cases on Tuesday, 11,588 across Sunday and Monday, 13,231 on Saturday, 13,713 on Friday, 12,341 on Thursday and 7,388 last Wednesday.
By provinces, Córdoba is the one with the most reported positives with 2,214, followed by Almería with 2,110, Málaga with 1,798, Cádiz with 1,694, Sevilla with 1,593, Granada with 843, Huelva with 673 and Jaén with 640.
Cumulative incidence rate
Meanwhile, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate fell for the second day in a row to stand at 1,560.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is 49.6 points less than on Tuesday. Some commentators are cautiously hoping this points to the beginning of the end of this sixth wave of coronavirus, as we are reaching or have already reached the peak.
Hospitalisations
This percentage of people admitted to hospital with Covid as a total of all hospitalisations is lower in Andalucía than in Spain as a whole, as the Andalusian average is 9.85%, while the Spanish average is 13.34%.
ICU occupancy by patients with Covid-19 in Andalusian hospitals is just over half the national average, with 12.53% of these beds occupied by seriously ill patients, while the national average is 23.5%.
Deaths
Since yesterday, there were 30 more deaths from coronavirus, two more than on Tuesday and the highest figure since 24 August when there were 53.
Of the 30 deaths, ten were in Cádiz, eight in Sevilla, four in Málaga and another four in Almería, two in Granada and two in Jaén. There were no deaths in either Huelva or Córdoba in the last 24 hours.
Recovered
A further 11,000 people recovered from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, 5,000 more than in the previous 24-hour period. The total number of people who have overcome the disease in Andalucía since the pandemic began two years ago is now 856,816.
Vaccinations
In Andalucía, 87% of those over 5 years of age – a total of 7,365,475 people – have had at least one coronavirus shot, while 82.5% have been fully vaccinated. The continuing march of the vaccination programme, along with the reduced rate of mortality and serious symptoms related with the much more prevalent Omicron variant, is credited with the positive hospitalisation figures in the region.
The age range for those now eligible to get their booster jab in Andalucía has been reduced to 50 years old.
