Free public transport continues in Spain in 2024
Certain groups in Spain will benefit from free trains but the details still have to be ironed out with regional governments
President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, confirmed this week that free and discounted public transport will continue throughout 2024, but only for select groups. The measure will apply to all of Spain but the finer points still need to be ironed out between the regional governments; for the moment, the free travel rules have only been detailed for Madrid.
Who will be able to travel for free next year?
- Minors: People under 18 years of age
- Young people: This age group hasn’t yet been specified by President Sánchez, although he hinted earlier in the year that it could cover passengers aged between 18 and 30
- Unemployed: People who do not have a job and are officially registered as unemployed
While the central government sets the price of Cercanías train tickets, it’s up to each autonomous community to decide how much to charge for bus and metro travel. With this in mind, the president plans to meet with all of the regional leaders in the coming weeks, after which time comprehensive details of public transport prices in 2024 will be released.
What we do know is that all of the transport discounts currently in place will continue into next year. In Madrid, the national government covers 30% of public transport tickets while the regional authorities chip in another 20%; the Spanish capital has already confirmed it wants to maintain this discount but the final cost will depend on the president.
