French mother and son on the run caught in Calpe, Alicante
The two fugitives were found in a holiday villa on the coast of Alicante
A 78-year-old French mother and her 44-year-old son who were wanted by the justice system have been discovered in a holiday villa in Calpe.
The two fugitives were wanted for fraud exceeding 75,000 euros. The two of them both had European arrest warrants for extradition for property crimes.
Because they were wanted by the authorities, it meant that the two of them led a discreet life in the rural area where they were staying.
They were discovered by the Civil Guard during one of their routine searches of hosting platforms. After the discovery, the Calpe Main Post began a three-day surveillance operation around the home.
After verifying their identity in the police databases and the validity of their arrest warrants, the guard kept an eye on them.
In addition, the investigators also found that both had moved around Spanish territory as tourists since 2019.
The armed institute reports that the son had a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by the French authorities due to fraud crimes related to the acquisition of electronic material through payments with bad checks.
"The detainee then sold these products to obtain liquidity, illegally obtaining a total of 46,000 euros.
For her part, the mother had a search, arrest and imprisonment order issued by the Central Court of Instruction No. 4 of Madrid from 2019, for alleged fraud," they explained in a statement.
The mother was also an expert fraudster and, according to the order, the woman had committed frauds at a bank in France, deceiving or attempting to deceive the bank to obtain funds worth 30,600 euros.
To do so, she allegedly used "fraudulent manoeuvres" such as depositing checks in bank accounts opened for that purpose and then transferring them to accounts in Spain.
These events took place in November 2016 in the town of Agen, France. Once the arrest warrants were confirmed, the officers arrested the mother and son on October 30.
Both detainees have been placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities, who have ordered that they both be placed in provisional prison while extradition proceedings are being resolved.
