ARCHIVED - Heavy rains guarantee summer water supply in Costa del Sol
The exceptional drought remains in place for now in Andalucia
After an exceptionally dry autumn and winter that threatened much of the Andalucía region with drought, the torrential downpours of recent days have topped up the La Concepción reservoir, which supplies the Western Costa del Sol, to more than 50% of its capacity, guaranteeing a water supply this summer.
According to the CEO of Acosol, Carlos Cañavate, the rainfall “guarantees the supply until the beginning of the next water year,” which is counted “from October to October,” so that “this year, at a tourist level, we can be calm and we will not have any problem of water supply.”
It has rained heavily across much of Spain on Wednesday March 23, and after the deluge this morning, the water level in the reservoir has risen to 37 hectometres compared to just 22.8 registered two weeks ago.
Mr Cañavate explained that the Costa del Sol system is designed to supply the eleven municipalities of the region: Manilva, Casares, Estepona, Marbella, Fuengirola, Mijas, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Benahavís, Ojén and Istán.
The forecast for the next few days means that the water reserves could reach as much as “44 or 45 hectometres,” but Acosol is keeping the exceptional drought situation that was decreed on March 11 by the Junta de Andalucía in place for the time being, in an effort “to avoid problems in the medium term in the area.”
“For us, the drought decree is key because we understand that there is still a lot to do to guarantee the infrastructure, and we cannot wait year after year for it to rain. We need a series of infrastructures that at least guarantee that there will be water in the future,” Mr Cañavate stressed.
