ARCHIVED - Incidence drops below 2,000 for first time this year: Spain Covid update February 8
All of the coronavirus indicators have declined in Spain over the weekend

On Monday February 7, the cumulative incidence rate in Spain dropped below 2,000 cases for the first time since December 30 and Covid experts are confident that the sixth wave is finally abating.
To this end, the Council of Ministers is set to announce today that mandatory mask-wearing outdoors will be scrapped later in the week, while the government debates reducing the quarantine period for coronavirus positive patients after several requests from the communities of Valencia, Madrid and Galicia.
Coronavirus infections
On Monday, the Ministry of Health reported 120,818 new coronavirus cases, a very significant decrease on the same day last week, when 182,123 cases were registered.
In the past two weeks, 946,655 positives were diagnosed, bringing the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 10,395,471.
Catalonia is the autonomous community which has registered the most infections in the last 14 days, with 243,723, followed by the Valencian Community, with 152,516.
Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 31.69%, down from 33.92% before the weekend.
Cumulative incidence rate
Since Friday’s report, the 14-day incidence rate has dropped 302 points to 1,997 cases per 100,000 inhabitants after weeks of skyrocketing figures.
The numbers vary widely across autonomous communities, however, with Catalonia holding on to the top spot with 3,139 cases, followed by the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community.
Both Andalucía and the Canary Islands are steadily beating the sixth wave, with just 701 and 798 cases respectively.
The age group with the highest incidence rate is those aged 11 and under, at 3,489, but this figure has once again dropped across all profiles since Friday.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Regarding hospital pressure, Catalonia continues to be the hardest hit region, with an overall occupancy rate that has soared in recent weeks to 54.25%. A worrying 36.68% of ICU beds are taken up by coronavirus patients.
In general in Spain, the situation in intensive care is only slightly better than it was before the weekend, falling from a 19.96% occupancy rate to 19.56% on Monday.
There are currently 15,991 patients hospitalised for Covid after 1,015 people were discharged since Friday.
A further 335 Covid-related fatalities were added to this Monday’s report, compared to 359 on the same day last week. This brings the overall death toll since the health crisis began in Spain to 94,570.
Despite the onset of the Omicron variant last year, 2021 saw the fewest fatalities of the pandemic, with 39,000 deaths – 41% of the total to date.
So far in 2022, 5,165 people have died from Covid, with 655 notified in the last seven days. Andalucía has reported the most fatalities, with 88, followed by the Valencian Community (81) and Aragon (71).
Vaccination data
As of Monday February 7, a total of 38,327,784 people over the age of 12, representing 90.9% of the population, have received both jabs, while 39,130,517 people (92.8) have received their first dose.
