ARCHIVED - Incidence rate less than half the national average: Andalusia Covid update December 10
Vaccination rates are also up to 92% in the region, though the number of new infections continues to rise

14-day incidence rate in Andalucía since March 2020
Andalusian Health Minister Jesús Aguirre has stated that the cumulative incidence rate in the region is “rising very slowly and an explosive increase is not expected”, partly thanks to the fact that “we have a vaccination volume that today reaches 92% of the target population.”
“The predominant strain is Delta,” he continued, “and, for now, the entry of Omicron is residual.” He also defended the obligatory presentation of the Covid certificate in care homes and hospitals, and has pointed out that the order has already been given for it to be articulated through QR code readers, with an approximate adaptation of two or three days and from then onwards it will be obligatory.
New infections
Andalucía recorded a total of 2,133 coronavirus infections in 24 hours on Friday December 10 and 6,269 new cases in the last seven days.
Eighty-six of these cases were associated with the outbreak among workers and family members in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Regional Hospital of Málaga who all got infected at a Christmas party last week, although none of them have yet been admitted to hospital.
There are three confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in Andalucía, one of them due to community transmission, a young girl from Madrid who came to the region over the bank holiday weekend, although none of these have required hospitalisation either.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate of coronavirus in Andalucía has seen a sharp rise of 14 points compared to yesterday, Thursday December 9, and 32 points on last Friday, to stand at 150.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants today, which is around half the national average.
Hospitalisations
108 more people were hospitalised with Covid-19 in the last seven days, taking the total up to 410, while patients admitted to the ICU rise to 88, 29 more than seven days ago. There is a bed occupancy rate of 2.33% on the ward and 4.97% in the ICU for patients with coronavirus, which is also “less than half the national average”.
This was announced by the Regional Minister for Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, who stressed that the pressure of care shows a “clear upward trend” but is far from the peaks reached in February close to 5,000 hospitalised patients and “with the capacity to absorb them perfectly”. He warned, however, that if hospital and care pressure nears 1,000 coronavirus admissions, “more coercive” measures would need to be taken, but we’re still a long way off that.
Deaths
There were five more deaths from Covid in Andalucía today and 11 this week, taking the total death toll since the start of the pandemic to 11,343.
Recovered
An additional 2,000 people got better from coronavirus this week, taking the total number of people who have recovered since the start of the pandemic to 800,485.
Vaccinations
There are now 6,853,488 over-12s in Andalucía who have been double jabbed, which is 92% of the population.
Mr Aguirre said today that he expects 260,000 Pfizer vaccines for children under the age of eleven to arrive next week and to be administered before Christmas, while a second shipment of 440,000 vaccines is expected to arrive at the beginning of January.
From Monday December 13, he added, it will be possible to request an appointment for the vaccination of children aged eleven, ten and nine, which can be carried out in the evenings and at weekends to facilitate the process for parents, who will have to accompany them.
