ARCHIVED - More than 300 health care workers infected in Malaga in 15 days
At the end of last year, 986 staff were on sick leave from Andalucía hospitals and health centres
Andalucían Nursing Union SATSE has warned that hospitals and primary care centres are reaching saturation point after it was revealed that 301 health workers were diagnosed with Covid in Malaga at the end of December. With fewer professionals available to carry out all the necessary daily activities and cover sick leave, the Omicron variant is wreaking havoc on the community’s health service.
In the second half of December, the number of health care staff with Covid in Andalucía had reached 17,247 and by the 27th of that same month, a staggering 986 workers were on sick leave with coronavirus, 30% of them nurses, “generating serious problems for the coverage of services due to the disastrous SAS planning.”
The union has severely criticised the health authorities for failing to renew the contracts of 3,300 nursing professions back in November and has called on the administration to ensure that all sick leave and vacancies are covered immediately, either by hiring more staff or paying overtime to existing workers.
This is the only feasible way to guarantee a quality service, SATSE has insisted, and will ensure that vaccination points are adequately manned by nursing staff in the coming weeks.
