Multi-million euro expansion planned for Costa del Sol Airport
The expansion of terminal T-3 will allow Malaga Airport to cater for 35 million passengers annually
Last November, Malaga-Costa del Sol airport exceeded 20 million passengers for the first time in its 104-year history, and for this reason, Aena, the world’s leading airport operator, is working on the future expansion of terminal T-3 to accommodate the increased demand.
When the work is completed, Malaga airport will have the capacity to cope with around 35 million passengers each year. A specialised company, Aertec, has been commissioned for the work on Spain’s third busiest airport, and the renovations will not only focus on the expansion of the terminal but on improving the traveller experience as well.
According to the director of Airport Planning at Aertec, Ana Pérez, the main objective is to improve, thanks to new technologies, the passenger experience, to make it “simpler”, so that the processes of checking in and going through security become much quicker.
New shops, restaurants and leisure services will also fill the increased floor space.
Aertec expects the initial phase of the airport’s functional design work to be completed before the end of the first quarter. Last year, the possibility of building a new terminal (T-4) was dismissed in favour of expanding the existing T-3, but this additional terminal may be necessary in the future if passenger numbers continue to grow.
Passenger growth
Airport managers initially set a goal of 20 million passengers by 2026, but Malaga already exceeded this milestone by the end of 2023. The increase in international travellers stands out.
Qatar Airlines announced this week the extension of the route that links Malaga and Doha (Qatar) in the summer season, which will start this year on March 31 and operate daily in July and August.
United Airlines has also reinforced its commitment to the Costa del Sol with a direct flight between the southern coast and New York-Newark beginning on May 2.
