New bike lane connects San Javier with Los Alcázares
The cycle path stretches almost 2 kilometres from the old San Javier airport

A new section of cycling lane, running from the roundabout at the old San Javier airport to the border with Los Alcázares, was inaugurated on Friday April 4. Lots of cyclists have already turned out to sample the path, which stretches 1.75 kilometres to Los Narejos and features an impressive 122 flexible beacons to separate riders from the busy road.
The new lane is 2.5 metres wide and is lit along its entire length with a total of 37 LED lights.
“This project provides safety because it is also pedestrian-friendly, which is very important in this busy area in the summer, where a nightclub and a go-kart track intersect,” said Mayor José Miguel Luengo.
With a budget of €258,963.68, the works have been financed through the 2023 Territorial Plan for Sustainable Tourism in the Region of Murcia.
The much sought after cycle lane is part of a broader plan endowed with €10 million of EU Next Generation funds, which the regional government is pumping into the three coastal municipalities to promote the Mar Menor as a year-round tourist destination.
According to the mayor, this bike path is just the first stage of a much bigger project that will extend the cycle lane another 2.7 kilometres to the Puertas del Mar roundabout in the urban area of Santiago de la Ribera, as well as the 2.5 kilometre stretch of Avenida Pinatar between the La Paloma roundabout and the Dos Mares Shopping Centre.
The council has already applied for a €475,000 grant to finance work on the next two portions, which should begin soon.
In both cases, the entire length of the lane will be lit, with the installation of a total of 109 LED lights, in addition to 764 flexible beacons separating the cycle path from the roadway. The works will include repairing the deteriorated road surface and widening the bike lane in key sections.
