New private hospital to be built in Orihuela Costa
The City Council will put out to tender a concession on a 33,000 square metre plot of land in a residential area
Orihuela Costa is to have a private hospital that will be in Lomas de Cabo Roig. This news was revealed this Thursday January 2 by the mayor, Pepe Vegara, more than a year after the Ribera Salud group was considering setting up a large hospital centre in Orihuela Costa.
The decision has now been made between the company and the City Council to build the hospital. Specifically, the agreement is the tendering of a public concession in favour of the company that offers a more advantageous fee in exchange for building a newly built hospital on the proposed plot.
Furthermore, the plot which has been chosen is the so-called EQ-1 plot, in Lomas de Cabo Roig and bordering Calle Cabo Turiñán to the west and the AP-7 to the east. The plot is roughly 33,000 square metres and is big enough to comfortably house the new hospital and a large number of parking spaces.
Moreover, in October 2022, the government team announced that the Orihuela Costa ecopark would be installed on this same plot where the hospital is now to be built. Finally, the PP-Vox bipartite rejected this location for the ecopark however because it was questioned by residents due to its proximity to residential areas.
The residents will now have a hospital instead of an ecopark on the plot. Furthermore, there has not yet been exact details on the concession period, nor the minimum fee that the company that finally acquires the municipal land will have to pay to the Council. However, the mayor has stated that the cost of building the hospital will amount to more than 10 million euros.
In regards to the use of the hospital and its benefit to the people of the area, the council has emphasised that the installation of a new hospital will generate the creation of 300 jobs and more than 1,000 indirect jobs. The project also budgeted for the construction of a new drinking water tank and a pedestrian extension at a dangerous point near the new project site to ensure the safety of the local people.
Furthermore, this news of the hospital comes in the wake of the possible construction of a second health centre in the area this year. The local goverment has stated that they are working hard to improve the healthcare situation for the people of the area, as over the years the standard of care has been failing.
Finally, the Orihuela Costa depends to a large extent on public health services, which, with the Torrevieja hospital as the main reference, are already beginning to show signs of exhaustion and saturation. Hopefully this new private hospital can help deal with the ever-growing demand on the services and breathe new life into the healthcare system of the area.
