ARCHIVED - Partial solar eclipse will be visible across much of Spain on Thursday June 10
The eclipse can also be seen online; the Diputación de Málaga for example, will be broadcasting from the El Torcal Observatory
For the first time in almost four years, those living across Spain will have the chance (weather permitting) to catch a glimpse of a partial solar eclipse on Thursday 10 June, the first of its kind to be visible here since 21 August 2017.
Unlike the last, which coincided with sunset and was therefore not very easy to see clearly, this week’s eclipse is due to happen between 11 am and 12.29 pm meaning anyone able to get outside for a few minutes should be able to spot it. Experts warn, however, that those wishing to watch the eclipse should use proper protection, rather than just normal sunglasses, to avoid damaging their eyes. Disposable cardboard glasses with specific filters can usually be obtained from opticians.
On this occasion, due to the distance from the moon, the sun will only appear to be partially covered. A greater amount of coverage will be visible from northern Spain, whereas, for those in the south or on the islands, just a sliver of the sun will disappear.
Anyone unable to get outside at that time of day or find glasses to use is likely to be able to watch online. The El Torcal observatory in Andalusia, for example, will be broadcasting telescope images of the eclipse on the Diputación de Málaga’s YouTube channel. This type of viewing has the added bonus of special filters that make it possible to see things such as solar flares.
The next chance to see a partial eclipse from Spain will be on 25 October 2022, and the next total eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026, the National Geographic Institute has reported.
