Pasadera de Canteras in Cartagena closed to traffic until August
Cartagena drivers face detours because of roadworks from 8am on Tuesday February 10

Pasadera de Canteras avenue in Cartagena has been closed to traffic from this week and won't reopen until August because of major environmental roadworks.
The road has been completely shut off at the intersection with the Canteras rambla for approximately five months so contractors can carry out a €2.25m project to restore the waterway and its tributaries.
Detours have been clearly signposted to keep traffic moving and reduce disruption for residents and drivers in the area near La Vaguada, with vehicles being redirected along the Subida a Tentegorra road.
The regional government approved the environmental restoration project for Rambla de Canteras and its secondary channels last May, and construction got underway in January. The scheme will cover five linear kilometres of the waterway, stretching from near San Vicente de Paúl school to the junction with José Luis Meseguer avenue.
Work includes building a new overpass using prefabricated concrete frames on Pasadera Avenue, which is why the road has been closed at the riverbed intersection. The existing dip in the road will be removed and replaced with the bridge structure.
The project also involves widening the roadway, adding a new pavement, installing extra surface drainage and putting up new signs.
Sustainable urban drainage systems and filter trenches are being installed as part of the environmental improvements, and more than 11,000 square metres will be worked on in total. This includes the promenade itself, landscaped areas, retention zones, pedestrian walkways and conditioned surfaces.
The environmental restoration of the riverbed involves removing invasive plant species, particularly giant cane, and replacing them with native vegetation and Mediterranean species such as tamarisk, mastic trees, oleanders and elms. The banks will also be reinforced at two points using gabion walls to improve stability.
