Powerful crosswinds prevent easyJet plane from landing in Malaga
The flight was forced to divert to Almeria before taking off for the Costa del Sol a short time later
On Friday January 19, an easyJet flight travelling from London’s Gatwick Airport to Malaga was forced to divert its course and land in Almeria instead, due to powerful crosswinds that struck the Airbus A320 plane during its approach.
Most of Andalucia was placed on high alert for torrential rain and powerful winds over the weekend.
Staff working in Malaga’s air control tower said that, following the incident, the runways were promptly adjusted to accommodate the unfavourable weather conditions, allowing planes to safely land in the Costa del Sol once again.
This was too late for the easyJet flight, however, which was forced to touch down in Almeria initially before eventually setting off again for Malaga when the wind died down.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issued a yellow alert weather warning for Friday, citing strong west and south-westerly winds of 50-60 km/h (force 7) and waves reaching heights of up to three meters along the coastline.
The day before, a Ryanair flight on its way from Luton to Lanzarote had to be diverted to Portugal when a massive fight broke out among seven British passengers. According to witnesses, the rowdy group appeared to be intoxicated and were harassing other travellers. When an air steward tried to quieten them down he was knocked to the floor, and the pilot had no choice but to land the plane as quickly as possible.
One British passenger was arrested in Faro by the Portuguese police.
