Saharan dust over Murcia skies: Weekend weather forecast January 23-26
Lorca Town Hall has warned of “Saharan air masses” this Thursday
The weather forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) for this weekend – the last in January – is for warm conditions in the Region of Murcia, though there has been a notice of the presence of the calima Saharan dust suspended in the air, especially in the south of the Region. While this weekend should be dry, there is also a chance of rain for the start of next week.
Maximum temperatures this weekend will remain stable at around 18-22ºC, while minimums at night-time will be around 4-7ºC in the northern areas and 8-10ºC in the south.
For this Thursday January 23, the Ayuntamiento de Lorca has warned of “an increase in the levels of PM10 particles due to the intrusion of Saharan air masses that is affecting the Region of Murcia”.
This is an increase in the levels of PM10 collected in the Air Quality Network, according to data provided by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, can “produce events of dry and wet dust deposition,” they point out.
The recorded quantity of PM10 particles was 58.55 µg/m3, which slightly exceeds the daily limit value of 50 µg/m3 on 1 occasion of the 35 times allowed per calendar year, and necessitates the implementation of the Municipal Action Framework Protocol’s Level 1 (Preventive).
Because these particles can potentially be harmful to health, it is recommended not to perform intense physical exercise outdoors, to reduce the use of private vehicles where possible and, if driving, to lower your speed.
The level of these dust particles in the air is measured continuously, and this current episode of calima is not thought to continue for very long or with any great increase in intensity.
Aemet forecasts mainly sunny conditions for Friday January 24, some heavier cloud cover on Saturday 25, and bright and sunny conditions again for Sunday 26.
Monday afternoon, January 27, could bring rain sweeping down over the Region from the northwest, but probably won’t reach as far as Cartagena and the towns along the Mar Menor. Right now, Aemet is forecasting temperatures to rise to highs of 24ºC on Monday, but then drop to maximums of just 17ºC on Tuesday. However, these predictions could change as we get closer to the time.
