Notorious gang enforcer Gerard Mackin is expected to fight his extradition from Spain to Ireland

Belfast native Gerard Mackin has been arrested at his second home in southern Spain after a European Arrest Warrant was issued for him last month. A central cog in the notorious Kinahan cartel wheel, the Irish thug is wanted for a money laundering scam that ran into the thousands in County Limerick back in 2019.

The 38-year-old gang member, described by Ireland’s Special Criminal Court as “depraved and barbaric,” was jailed in 2017 for a horrific attack during which his 53-year-old victim was nailed to a kitchen floor. At the time, he was also believed to have been a senior member of the feared New INLA gang.

Mackin was previously arrested and questioned about the 2019 money laundering affair but was released. Now, the Director of Public Prosecutions claims there is enough solid evidence for a conviction.

He has spent the majority of the last two years laying low in Spain and is currently being held in custody. Some reports claim that an extradition hearing was held in Madrid’s Audencia Nacional court on Tuesday September 20, but this is yet to be confirmed by official channels.

It is understood, however, that he plans to fight his removal back to Ireland.

Mackin is a close friend of the Kinahan cartel’s infamous hitman Eamon Cumberton along with Caolan Smyth, who was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for the attempted murder of James ‘Mago’ Gately.

One source said: “This is quite a significant arrest because Mackin is known to law enforcement agencies across Europe.

“He was very close to Jonathan Keogh and also had links to other members of the Kinahan cartel over the years.

“He is thought to have remained loyal to his friends in the Kinahan cartel.”

Just a week ago, another Irishman, the gang’s banking expert and Nero Vodka founder Johnny Morrissey, was lifted at his swish Marbella villa on suspicion of laundering more than 200 million euros over the last year and a half.

Through this arrest, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau in Ireland is hoping to heap the pressure on other gang lords by digging up records relating to the cartel associates.
