ARCHIVED - Six earthquakes in just one day in Almeria, Spain
All six quakes occurred between Pulpí and Cuevas del Almanzora in eastern Andalucía
There has been increased seismic activity recently in Almeria on Spain’s southeast coast. According to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), there have been up to six earthquakes of varying intensity in the space of just 24 hours in the area between Cuevas del Almanzora and Pulpí.
The first one, with a magnitude of 1.7 mgLg, had its epicentre in Cuevas del Almanzora, although with a depth of 13 kilometres it was not strong enough to be felt by the general public.
The second earthquake had a magnitude of 2.4 and a very shallow epicentre in the municipality of Pulpí, but also very close to Guazamara.
The largest earthquake was the third in the series of tremors, which took place on Thursday at 5.06am, with its epicentre in Pulpí and registering a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale. It was felt especially in the towns of Pulpí and San Juan de los Terreros, but also rocked the nearby Murcia towns of Águilas and Lorca.
The fourth earthquake took place on Thursday at 12.19pm in the same area (epicentre located in Pulpí at a depth of 4km), with a magnitude of 2.0.
The fifth earthquake was recorded just seven minutes later, at 12.26pm and had a magnitude of 2.5, with its epicentre at a depth of 3km.
The sixth earthquake, and the last so far, occurred at 12.27pm, just one minute after the previous one.
