Spanish city reaches highest December temperature of all time
Málaga recorded a sweltering high of 29.9ºC on Tuesday December 12
With many of the country’s beaches still packed to capacity and happy tourists strolling around in shorts and T-shirts, it’s no secret that December 2023 is turning out to be an exceptional one all across Spain. In fact, records are being broken left and right, and this week the highest December temperature of all time was registered in Andalucia.
The region is no stranger to setting the heat bar high: before now, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the hottest winter day in Spain was recorded in Motril, when the Granada town hit an extraordinary 29.4ºC on December 9, 2010.
But Málaga has blown this illustrious high out of the water after thermometers at the Meteorological Centre reached 29.9ºC at 2.20pm on Tuesday December 12.
The Region of Murcia, which has been tipping the heat scales all year, also broke several records of its own on Tuesday. The second-highest temperature in the country was recorded in Alhama de Murcia, where the mercury hit a blistering 29.8ºC shortly before 3.30pm and around the same time, highs of 29.7ºC were registered in Fuente Álamo.
Unfortunately, this extraordinary heat is closely linked to climate change but Tuesday’s scorcher in Andalucia was also caused by what’s known as a terrestrial wind, a type of breeze typical to the region that at night is directed from the earth’s surface towards the sea coast.
In any case, global warming is heating up the Earth at an alarming rate and according to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), 2023 is set to close as the hottest year in history with record levels of CO2 in the atmosphere and a worldwide drought situation that is well on its way to becoming “an emergency unprecedented on a planetary scale”.
