ARCHIVED - The most deaths in a single day in almost a year: Andalusia Covid update February 8
Andalucía had 68 deaths from Covid in the last 24 hours, the highest figure since last March

14-day incidence rate in Andalucía since March 2020
Despite the sunshine, it’s a dark for Andalucía as the region saw more deaths from Covid in the entirety of this sixth wave that started back in December. Just when it seemed the daily death toll was beginning to subside, with a low of 12 fatalities over 48 hours across Sunday and Monday, they shot back up again to 68 in the last 24 hours.
Still, the number of infections and the incidence rate are both down, as are hospitalisations when compared with last week.
New infections
On Tuesday February 8, Andalucía recorded a total of 2,457 positives Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, 1,937 fewer than the previous day.
The 2,457 infections on Tuesday are recorded after 4,394 on Monday (48 hours), 4,818 on Saturday, 5,136 on Friday, 5,472 on Thursday, 5,831 on Wednesday and 4,477 last Tuesday.
By provinces, Almería is the one with the highest number of new infections with 480, followed by Córdoba with 407, Málaga with 367, Jaén with 238, Sevilla with 323, Cádiz with 221, Granada with 213 and Huelva with 208.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate the 14-day incidence stands at 662.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down 61.1 points from Monday.
Hospitalisations
The number of patients hospitalised by coronavirus in the last 24 hours has risen by 52 after five consecutive days of decline. There are now a total of 1,805 people in hospital with Covid in Andalucía, 485 less than a week ago.
In the case of ICU admissions, they have increased by three from yesterday up to 216, but that’s still a decrease of 34 from this time last week.
Deaths
Unfortunately, a further 68 deaths were reported, more than five times as many as there were across Sunday and Monday. This is the highest figure of the sixth wave and the most deaths in one day since March 3 2021, when 69 deaths were recorded.
Of the 68 deaths, 12 have been recorded in Jaén, 11 in Granada, 11 in Málaga, ten in Almería, ten in Seville, five in Cádiz, five in Córdoba and four in Huelva.
Vaccinations
Since the vaccination programme began, 7,064,299 people over 5 years of age have been fully vaccinated in Andalucía, amounting to 83.4% of the whole population. At the same time, 7,531,045 people have had at least one shot – 88.9% of the population.
