The Simpsons have done it again: how Springfield predicted Spain’s big blackout
Social media goes into meltdown as fans spot yet another eerily accurate moment

As always, X (formerly Twitter) filled up with movie scenes and TV moments that felt like they had predicted the whole thing. And of course, it wasn’t long before The Simpsons popped up.
The much-loved cartoon has earned a reputation over the years for being strangely accurate when it comes to real-world events. From the September 11 attacks to the horsemeat scandal in the UK, and even Donald Trump becoming president, fans have pointed out all sorts of weird coincidences. This time, sharp-eyed viewers found something else to add to the list.
A scene from episode 7 of season 35 quickly went viral. It shows Mr Burns pressing a big red button that shuts off power to the entire city of Springfield. Sound familiar? It struck a chord with plenty of people, who joked that someone must have done exactly the same thing to wipe out electricity across the Iberian Peninsula.
The clip drew thousands of likes and shares, with plenty of amused reactions. “Nostradamus was The Simpsons,” said one user. “They predicted it again,” wrote another. One person simply put, “The Simpsons never fail.”
Of course, nobody’s saying the show was really behind the blackout but the timing was just too perfect not to enjoy. Some people also compared the incident to scenes from the Spanish series Blackout, created by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and Isaki Lacuesta, and the American film Day Zero starring Robert De Niro.
Whatever caused the outage, Monday April 28 will go down as a day to remember - and once again, The Simpsons were right there with us.
