Three Kings weekend weather forecast in Spain: Jan 4-7
A polar air mass will bring cold, rain and snow to Spain over the next few days
Weather outlook on Friday January 5
The big weather change of 2024 is already in our sights and meteorologists are awaiting the arrival of a mass of maritime polar air that will result in widespread rain, biting cold and snow in the mountains.
Mid-week, a front associated with storm Henk, which is battering the UK at the moment, began crossing the country slowly and left showers and stormy intervals in central Spain and parts of the south, particularly western Andalucia.
This unsettled weather will continue throughout Thursday and even on Friday morning, but the good news is that the skies should clear and the rain will recede in time for the highly anticipated Three Kings’ parades on Friday evening.
The morning of Thursday January 4 will be damp in much of the southwest and the Balearic Islands, but another Atlantic front during the afternoon will bring widespread rain to northern Spain as well. This will be much more active as it will have a maritime polar air mass behind it.
As a result, the showers and storms will extend to most parts of the country, although the downpours will be far more intense in Galicia, Andalucia and Extremadura.
By the end of the day, the rain will likely reach the Mediterranean, although it will be generally weak and scattered. Snowfall is also expected in the Cantabrian region at a height of just 1,000 metres.
A cold front will wash over Spain on Friday January 5 and while the rain won’t be heavy, it will persist in most of the country during the morning. Unfortunately, the Three Kings’ parades could be a washout in Cantabria, the Balearic Islands and eastern Catalonia but in the rest of Spain, the showers will have subsided by evening.
Temperatures will plummet across the board though, with maximums below 10ºC in much of the northwest, around 10ºC in central Spain and between 10ºC and 16ºC in the south and the Mediterranean.
Plenty of showers are forecast in the Balearic Islands on Saturday January 6, especially early on, and the rainfall will be heavy in the extreme north due to the proximity of storm Henk.
In the rest of the country, on Three Kings Day the experts do not expect rain, although some weak precipitation could sneak into central Spain.
Daytime temperatures on Saturday will likely remain below 10ºC in much of the country, except in parts of the south and in the Mediterranean, where they are expected to exceed 15ºC.
The cold will intensify from Sunday January 7. A blocking anticyclone is hovering over the British Isles and this, together with a storm in the Mediterranean, will cause a flow of cool air from the northeast to Spain.
This air mass will result in colder weather than on previous days, but it will also be drier.
