Trains between Murcia and Malaga begin on June 1

In an attempt to better connect the Region of Murcia with more destinations across Spain, from June 1 Renfe is launching two brand new AVE services between Murcia and Málaga, with one departure in each direction every day.

These direct routes will offer a seamless journey between the two popular destinations, stopping at Madrid’s Atocha-Almudena Grandes station along the way. Tickets are now on sale through all the usual channels.

The AVE service will leave Málaga every day at 8.05am and arrive in Murcia at 2.37pm. Travelling in the opposite direction, passengers will depart from Murcia at 3.32pm, arriving in the Costa del Sol at 10.36pm.

Renfe are calling it a “direct” service because passengers will not have to get off and change trains in Madrid, but the journey time in excess of 6 hours seems like something of a bad joke to people who envision “high-speed” travel as something different altogether.

In addition to the new Murcia-Costa del Sol service, Renfe is creating connections between Málaga and six other cities – Cuenca, Albacete, Alicante, Villena, Elche and Orihuela. This means even more opportunities to explore some of Spain’s most vibrant regions by rail.

These new “direct” services are added to the current schedule of travel between Málaga, Alicante and Murcia, which has eight daily travel options (three leaving from Málaga and five leaving from Murcia). These routes involve a change of train but the entire journey can be booked on a single integrated ticket.

Finally, on April 8, Renfe announced two more AVE services which connect the Region of Murcia and Burgos, as well as an Avlo train that links the Murcian capital with Valladolid. Tickets for these services will go on sale during the next week.

From May 21, passengers using this Avlo service will travel in style aboard brand new state-of-the-art S106 trains. As well as promising more comfort and services, the trains each have more than 500 seats, meaning that they can accommodate 43% more passengers.
