ARCHIVED - 17 care homes in Alicante with active Covid outbreaks
Last month only three care homes reported outbreaks in Alicante
There are currently 17 care homes with active cases of coronavirus in the province of Alicante, while a month ago there were only three centres with outbreaks.
The number of care home with Covid outbreaks has been multiplied by five in just a month, although, thanks to the vaccine, the fifth wave is having a much milder effect on residents, with most cases being classed as asymptomatic or very mild.
Since March 29, 2021, when the vaccination of residents and staff members in care homes concluded, there have been 106 cases of Covid in residences and no reported deaths.
Covid outbreaks in residences for the elderly can be started by infected staff or visiting family members, and the virus can even be brought back into the care home by residents who have been on an outing, due principally to the fact that although the vaccine helps to limit the chances of severe illness or death, it does not prevent the transmission of the virus and it is possible to catch the virus after vaccination.
According to data from the Ministry of Equality, 4 per cent of care home staff are unvaccinated and the government have proposed several options to guarantee the safety of elderly residents, including relocating unvaccinated workers or making vaccination a requirement to be able to work in these centres.
Although this last measure would not be applicable until Covid vaccines have been offered to the entire population; the latest update reports that 3,540,523 people in the region have received at least one dose.
Another proposed option is carrying out periodic PCR tests on unvaccinated staff members to reduce the chance of an outbreak.
The regional government has launched a campaign this week to offer coronavirus vaccines to people who missed their first jab appointment.
