81-year-old Mayor of Malaga struck by electric scooter while walking to work
The accident happened on a cycle path crossing just outside the city hall building
The mayor of the city of Málaga, 81-year-old Francisco de la Torre, was hit by an electric scooter earlier this week while he was walking to work at the city hall.
Reports of the incident state that, just as the mayor was crossing on the pedestrian crossing in front of the ayuntamiento building, someone riding an electric scooter bumped into him on the recently opened cycle path.
It seems that, in contravention of proper road usage, the person riding the scooter did not give way at the pedestrian crossing as they should have and knocked into the octogenarian.
At that point, the rider stopped and asked Mayor De la Torre whether he was okay, whereupon the mayor turned around and told the rider that he was fine and “not to worry”.
In response to this and other similar accidents in this spot where the pedestrian crossing meets the cycle and scooter lane, some council employees have suggested that the crossing point be better signposted, reminding those riding scooters and bicycle that pedestrians have priority.
