Almeria train and bus station to be demolished this July
The transfer of buses to the provisional station in Almería will begin next week, although there is no start date specified
As part of the ongoing project to bring the high-speed AVE rail to the city of Almería, connecting the Andalucía locality with Madrid and the rest of the country, the Estación Intermodal combined bus-and-train station in Almería will be demolished starting this July to make way for a new station.
The Estación Intermodal was opened less than 20 years ago, in 2005, and was built to replace the old train station right next door which dates back to 1893.
A new bus station has just been built behind the original train station, and now the new planned train station is planned as the next stage of the works. According to plans, there will also be an underground car park beneath the station.
As yet, there is no set date for when the existing station will be demolished, but it will involve moving the operations of bus companies within the next month. As of this March, trains to Almería no longer stop in the capital, but go up to the station Huércal-Almería and from there passengers must take a replacement bus service.
The underground works for the arrival of the high-speed train to Almería, which are being carried out by the company Sacyr for 165 million euros, include a 1.9-kilometre access tunnel and a new surface station, which will become an intermodal node to cope with the new services and the increase in traffic.
With a surface area of 4,800 square metres and six tracks (three standard gauge), it will also house a new bus station for long-distance coaches and short-distance city buses, a drop-off area and the aforementioned car park.
These works will integrate Almería into the high-speed network, through the LAV to Levante, and into the Mediterranean Corridor and the European railway networks, connecting it by high-speed rail to the rest of the continent.
