ARCHIVED - Two dead as man shoots girlfriend in Malaga street before killing himself
Two dead on the Costa del Sol (Andalusia) in what appears to be a case of gender violence
A 46-year-old Spanish woman died on Thursday morning (15 July) on a Málaga city street after being shot, allegedly by the partner she had been living with for two years.
112 Emergency Services Andalusia received several phone calls at 8.50 am to report that shots had been fired on Calle Fernán Nuñez in the provincial capital city and that there were two victims.
After initial investigations, National Police sources explained that a 55-year-old man had fired a rifle at his girlfriend before also shooting himself. Both partners were reported dead at the scene.
There was no evidence that either of the victims had ever lodged a report against their partner for domestic violence, the police force confirmed.
There has been a dramatic and extremely worrying increase in the number of women who have been killed by their partners or former partners over the last few months.
The Spanish authorities run a helpline service for victims of domestic violence, with attention and assistance available in 53 languages 24 hours a day by telephone on 016 (free number). The service can also be contacted by WhatsApp: 600 000 016 or email: 016-online@igualdad.gob.es
