DANA disrupts travel plans throughout Spain: How to get a refund for flights, trains and hotels
In most cases, people in Spain affected by the storm should be entitled to a full refund for cancellations
The DANA storm has brought chaos to Spain, causing widespread disruptions to travel plans and leaving many wondering how to recoup their losses. With flights, trains and hotels cancelled or affected, it's important to know your rights and how to request a refund.
Flight cancellations: What you need to know
If your flight has been cancelled due to the storms, you may be wondering if you're entitled to a refund.
According to European Regulation 261/2004, if the cancellation is due to "extraordinary circumstances" such as bad weather, passengers are not entitled to financial compensation.
However, you are still entitled to a refund of the ticket price and assistance from the airline, such as food and water.
To request a refund, simply visit your airline's website, enter your flight details, and follow the process.
Train cancellations
If your train has been cancelled, you may be eligible for a refund or compensation.
According to Regulation 2021/782, passengers are entitled to a refund or re-routing if their train is cancelled or delayed.
Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo, the main train operators in Spain, have mechanisms in place to handle cancellations and refunds. Simply visit their websites, enter your ticket number and follow the prompts.
In the case of Renfe, its commitment to punctuality promises a 100% refund of the ticket when there is a delay of more than 90 minutes. The same policy is also established by the operators Iryo and Ouigo.
Hotel cancellations
If you've booked a hotel room and need to cancel due to the DANA, you may be wondering if you'll lose your money.
According to the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU), you have the right to cancel your reservation without charge or penalty if the cancellation is due to force majeure.
You also have the right to recover any money you've paid in advance, without charge.
If you prefer, you can also agree with the hotel to change your reservation to another date. However, it's essential to remember that you have the right to a refund and the hotel cannot impose a different solution on you.
The DANA is expected to continue impacting Spain in the coming days, so it's essential to stay informed and plan ahead. Check the latest travel updates and weather forecasts before embarking on your journey.
