ARCHIVED - Junta maintains existing Covid restrictions in Andalucia as infections reach highest levels in a month
The increase in Covid infections across Andalucia has caused concern among health officials, who have decided not to ease restrictions further until at least the middle of the month.
Number of new cases reported daily in the Andalusia region
As Covid infection levels in Andalucia continue to rise the region has hit the highest number of new cases for a month, forcing the committee of experts of the regional government (Junta de Andalucía) to delay any further easing of restrictions.
On Thursday, June 3 a further 1,639 new infections were reported in Andalucia, as well as 10 deaths, according to the latest figures from the Institute of Statistics (IECA).
The figures also showed that the cumulative incidence rate over the past 14 days now stands at 181.6 cases per 100,000 people, 3.7 per cent higher than the day before, and 16.8 per cent higher than seven days ago.
By provinces, Sevilla still has the highest number of new cases with 444, followed by Malaga with 327, Granada with 217, Huelva with 174, Jaen with 167, Cadiz with 146, Cordoba with 121 and Almeria with 43.
Andalucia’s committee of experts, the panel which decides which measures and restrictions should be put in place in the region, met yesterday to discuss moving forward in Andalucia’s de-escalation plan and announced they would not be easing further restrictions until at least the middle of June.
The news means that Andalucia remains in phase 1 of its de-escalation plan, with no changes to opening hours or capacities at restaurants or at events including weddings.
The current restrictions include:
- No curfew
- Andalusia opens its regional borders
- Bars and restaurants will be able to remain open until midnight with the maximum number of people seated at tables limited to eight indoors and 10 outdoors
- Municipalities with high levels of virus will still have restrictions on opening hours and table maximums in place
- Celebrations such as weddings will be able to host up to 500 people outdoors and 300 indoors
- Music bars and nightclubs will be able to reopen until 2am with a maximum of eight people per table indoors and 10 outdoors and dancing allowed in municipalities in level 1 and with mask wearing in place
- Cinemas, theaters, sports events and bullrings will reopen with one seat left between spectators in municipalities in alert levels 1 and 2, while in municipalities in other alert levels a distance of 1.5 meters will have to be observed between spectators
- Beaches and swimming pools will be open without any opening hour restrictions but safety distances between groups and other protection measures will be enforced
In addition, masks must be worn in publñic other than when lying on a beach, swimming and eating or drinking.

The committee had been due to move Andalucia out of phase 1 of its de-escalation plan on May 31, however the increase in infections forced a delay in their meeting to June 2, and officials have said they will not now meet again until later in June.
