Man killed after running onto runway and being sucked into jet engine of Spain-bound flight
The man reportedly entered the restricted area of Bergamo airport in Italy with the intention of taking his own life

A man died on Tuesday July 8 after being sucked into the engine of a passenger plane that was preparing to take off from Bergamo’s Orio al Serio airport in Italy, which serves mainly low-cost flights to and from Milan.
The aircraft, operated by Spanish airline Volotea and bound for Asturias in northern Spain, was taxiing on the runway when the incident occurred.
According to reports from Italian news agency ANSA, the man had deliberately entered the restricted airfield area, apparently with the intention of ending his life.
The tragedy happened at around 10.20am and forced a temporary suspension of airport operations until midday while emergency services responded.
Police have confirmed that the man was neither a passenger nor an airport employee, and an investigation is under way into how he managed to bypass security and reach the operational part of the runway.
Italian authorities are now reviewing surveillance footage and airport procedures to determine what led to the breach and to clarify whether the incident was indeed a suicide. The victim has not yet been officially identified.
Volotea and airport management have not commented publicly on the matter, but local sources have described the event as deeply shocking for staff and passengers who witnessed the scene.
Orio al Serio is one of Italy’s busiest airports for low-cost carriers, located around 45 kilometres northeast of Milan.
