The Brits and French involved in Spanish politician murder plot: What we know so far
An international terrorist group seems to be behind the failed assassination attempt on Alejo Vidal-Quadras

More details have emerged of the convoluted international plot to assassinate a former Spanish politician, Alejo Vidal-Quadras.
Vidal-Quadras was shot in the face in broad daylight on a Madrid street on November 9, and police have now arrested three people in Andalucía for their part in the crime, one of whom is a British woman.
In the course of their investigations, police have now discovered that the plot was carefully planned for months by a group of terrorists. In September of this year, they took the first step in Spain.
That was the moment when a 22-year-old Spanish bricklayer from Mijas (Málaga) bought the motorcycle that was eventually to be used as the getaway vehicle for the crime and registered it in his name.
An investigation by the Provincial Information Brigade of Madrid and the General Information Commissariat of the National Police has ruled out this young man knew what the bike was going to be used for. He is not part of the terrorist organisation, but was rather used by them as an unwitting accomplice. They gave him money (“about 500 euros”) simply to put the motorcycle in his name.
Then, they asked him to update the motorbike’s insurance to avoid accidental problems with traffic incidents, for which he had to travel by train from Málaga to Madrid. Police reports state that he went up to Madrid in the company of the man who was later going to shoot Vidal-Quadras.
At the same time, several people were tasked with watching Vidal-Quadras’ movements for weeks in the vicinity of his home in Madrid, where they finally committed the attack. Among those set to watch him is the Spanish man who was detained in Lanjarón (Granada) this week. He is said to be a Spanish convert to Shiite Islam and a follower of the Ayatollah of Iran.
This is significant because the Iranian government had previously declared Vidal-Quadras, a well-known defender of Iranian opponents, a “terrorist” in October 2022.
The man arrested in Granada, an English woman, has also been detained. Police say she is a young woman from a “good family”, and that she lived in Lanjarón with her mother and partner. While she had been arrested, thus far, no evidence has been found linking the woman to the plan to kill Vidal-Quadras.
Now police are trying to clarify the connection between this man and the hitman, a French citizen of Tunisian origin who had already murdered one person in Paris and who accepted the order to kill the Spanish politician.
It appears that the two, the man from Granada and the French hitman, travelled to Madrid and stayed in a hotel the night before the attack. On November 9, the two went to the area near the politician’s home, which they had visited before on several occasions. This time, the hitman arrived alone, on the motorcycle that was in the name of the Málaga bricklayer, while the Granada man turned up in a car.
The hitman waited for Vidal-Quadras to arrive at his home and approached him, with his helmet on, and without saying a word shot him in the mouth. Then he left, alone, driving the motorcycle. During his escape, his Granada accomplice accompanied him, driving the car. Both, according to the investigation, burned the motorcycle and abandoned it near Fuenlabrada (Madrid).
The hitman is still on the run. He is wanted in France for another murder, and has almost 40 more crimes on his rap sheet.
As well as trying to track him down, police are also attempting to find out who paid him for his hitman services.
