Footbridge over Almeria train tracks removed as part of railway work
Pedestrians will now have to walk much further to get around the train tracks
The footbridge next to the train and bus station that crosses over the railway tracks in Almería city is being dismantled as part of the ongoing project to move the train tracks underground and bring the AVE high-speed rail connection to the Andalucía city.
Work began this Wednesday December 13, with Almeria City Council informing of traffic cuts on the Carretera de Sierra Alhamilla while the footbridge is taking apart and removed.
This is one of just two bridges that pedestrians can use to cross over the train tracks, which fairly cut the city of Almería in half. While the long-term goal of burying the train tracks will undoubtedly be positive, the fact that pedestrians will now have to walk much further to get from one side to the other until work is completed in three years’ time will be unpopular, if unavoidable.
The work to dismantle the bridge is initially scheduled to be completed by midnight this same Wednesday, at which time traffic will go back to normal.
